Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and pelvodynia are chronic pain still poorly understood and the links between them are all the more so. Health professionals therefore have few resources to understand, diagnose and treat these pains. They may consider and treat these ailments individually, which does not represent optimal care management for the patient and leads to overmedication. This article aims to highlight their contiguity from epidemiological, etiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic perspectives. This study was based on articles which were found using databases such as PubMed and Web of Science. No exclusion criteria were used. Fourteen studies were reviewed. This present work shows that the clinical presentations of these syndromes are similar, as exemplified by their strong association with anxiety and depression. The neurophysiological mechanisms involved in these conditions are similar to those in patients. The diagnosis is essentially based on visual examination and an elimination of all other possible causes. In addition, this work promotes the fact that a common therapy can be implemented when BMS and pelvodynia co-occur. However, the literature on the subject is still very limited. This can be deepened by exploring all the effective treatments in BMS and vulvodynia for penoscrotodynia. Finally, for all these pains, there is a therapeutic order to respect starting with a psychological approach, then topical treatments, systemic therapy and surgical. This therapeutic gradient assists practitioner in their patient's pain management. This article also allows health care providers to quickly find an effective systemic treatment for a patient with both BMS and pelvodynia.

Oral and dental diseases are a major global burden, the most common non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and may even affect an individual's general quality of life and health. The most prevalent dental and oral health conditions are tooth decay (otherwise referred to as dental caries/cavities), oral cancers, gingivitis, periodontitis, periodontal (gum) disease, Noma, oro-dental trauma, oral manifestations of HIV, sensitive teeth, cracked teeth, broken teeth, and congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate. Herbs have been utilized for hundreds of years in traditional Chinese, African and Indian medicine and even in some Western countries, for the treatment of oral and dental conditions including but not limited to dental caries, gingivitis and toothaches, dental pulpitis, halitosis (bad breath), mucositis, sore throat, oral wound infections, and periodontal abscesses. Herbs have also been used as plaque removers (chew sticks), antimicrobials, analgesics, anti-inflammatory agents, and antiseptics. L. in particular has been utilized in traditional Asian medicine for tooth-pain management, prevention of dental caries and reduction in gum inflammation. The distribution of cannabinoid (CB) receptors in the mouth suggest that the endocannabinoid system may be a target for the treatment of oral and dental diseases. Most recently, interest has been geared toward the use of Cannabidiol (CBD), one of several secondary metabolites produced by L. CBD is a known anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anxiolytic, anti-microbial and anti-cancer agent, and as a result, may have therapeutic potential against conditions such burning mouth syndrome, dental anxiety, gingivitis, and possible oral cancer. Other major secondary metabolites of L. such as terpenes and flavonoids also share anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anxiolytic and anti-microbial properties and may also have dental and oral applications. This review will investigate the potential of secondary metabolites of L. in the treatment of dental and oral diseases.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic debilitating oral condition characterised by a burning sensation of the oral mucosa in an otherwise apparently normal person. Its aetiology and pathogenesis are obscure, but both psychogenic factors and peripheral and central neuropathies appear to be implicated. There is no cure for BMS, and treatment with either local or systemic medications focuses on the relief of symptoms and on improving quality of life. In recalcitrant cases, psychological/psychiatric intervention may be helpful. In order to improve treatment outcomes, a better understanding of the pathogenesis of this syndrome might provide a basis for the development of more effective management strategies. In this short review, we discuss current knowledge of the diagnosis, aetiopathogenesis, and management of BMS.

BACKGROUND AND AIM
An association between reflux and burning mouth syndrome (BMS) has been proposed. Aims of this study were: 1) to investigate the frequency of BMS in a sample of GERD patients; 2) to measure G17, in a sample of BMS patients; 3) to assess the efficacy of different therapeutical schedules for GERD in BMS patients.
METHODS
We divided the study in 3 main steps. In step one, we analyzed 500 consecutive GERD patients' type and frequency of extraesophageal manifestations including BMS. In step two, we collected 124 consecutive BMS patients' symptoms and G17. In step three, we evaluate the efficacy of 3 different drugs on BMS.
RESULTS
In step one, 204 patients complained heartburn; 31 globus pharyngeus; 52 chronic cough; 54 pharyngitis; 31 postnasal drip; 56 burning mouth symptoms; 34 noncardiac chest pain; 17 asthma and 21 sleep apnea. In step two, 29 patients had G17 ≤ 1 pg/L; 64 patients between 1 and 3; and 31 patients ≥ 3. In step three, 49 patients reported slight benefit with PPI, 75 no benefit. 61 patients reported slight benefit with sodium alginate and sodium bicarbonate, 63 no benefit. 23 reported an almost complete remission with HYCHSA, 26 slight benefit, 33 no benefit.
CONCLUSIONS
Prevalence of BMS in GERD patients was similar to that reported for chronic chough and pharyngitis. Low levels of G17 were found in the majority of BMS patients. Finally, we observed a greater benefit from barrier drugs therapy than from PPI therapy in BMS patients. (www.actabiomedica.it).

INTRODUCTION
Burning mouth syndrome mainly affects women, particularly after the menopause, when its prevalence may be 18% to 33%.
METHODS AND OUTCOMES
We conducted a systematic overview, aiming to answer the following clinical question: What are the effects of selected treatments for burning mouth syndrome? We searched: Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library, and other important databases up to January 2015 (Clinical Evidence overviews are updated periodically; please check our website for the most up-to-date version of this overview).
RESULTS
At this update, searching of electronic databases retrieved 70 studies. After deduplication and removal of conference abstracts, 45 records were screened for inclusion in the overview. Appraisal of titles and abstracts led to the exclusion of 25 studies and the further review of 20 full publications. Of the 20 full articles evaluated, one systematic review and nine RCTs were added at this update. We performed a GRADE evaluation for five PICO combinations.
CONCLUSIONS
In this systematic overview, we categorised the efficacy for six interventions based on information about the effectiveness and safety of alphalipoic acid, benzodiazepines, benzydamine hydrochloride, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a complex disorder that is characterized by warm or burning sensation in the oral mucosa without changes on physical examination. It occurs more commonly in middle-aged and elderly women and often affects the tip of the tongue, lateral borders, lips, hard and soft palate. This condition is probably of multi-factorial origin, often idiopathic, and its etiopathogensis is unknown. BMS can be classified into two clinical forms namely primary and secondary BMS. As a result, a multidisciplinary approach is required for better control of the symptoms. In addition, psychotherapy and behavioral feedback may also help eliminate the BMS symptoms.

The diagnosis and management of facial pain below the eye can be very different dependant on whether the patient visits a dentist or medical practitioner. A structure for accurate diagnosis is proposed beginning with a very careful history. The commonest acute causes of pain are dental and these are well managed by dentists. Chronic facial pain can be unilateral or bilateral and continuous or episodic. The commonest non-dental pains are temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), especially musculoskeletal involving the muscles of mastication either unilaterally or bilaterally; they may be associated with other chronic pains. A very wide range of treatments are used but early diagnosis, reassurance and some simple physiotherapy is often effective in those with good coping strategies. Dentists will often make splints to wear at night. Neuropathic pain is usually unilateral and of the episodic type; the most easily recognized is trigeminal neuralgia. This severe electric shock like pain, provoked by light touch, responds best to carbamazepine, and neurosurgery in poorly controlled patients. Trauma, either major or because of dental procedures, results in neuropathic pain and these are then managed as for any other neuropathic pain. Red flags include giant cell arteritis which much be distinguished from temporomandibular disorders (TMD), especially in >50 yr olds, and cancer which can present as a progressive neuropathic pain. Burning mouth syndrome is rarely recognized as a neuropathic pain as it occurs principally in peri-menopausal women and is thought to be psychological. Chronic facial pain patients are best managed by a multidisciplinary team.

Burning mouth syndrome is a condition characterized by a painful burning sensation in the oral mucosa lasting at least 3-6 months with no definitive etiology. The pathophysiology is not well understood, though there appears to be a connection with other neuropsychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. We briefly discuss our experience with a patient who suffered from this conidtion and how it was treated with mandibular and maxillary nerve blocks after failing more conservative pharmacological options.

Burning mouth syndrome is a debilitating medical condition affecting nearly 1.3 million of Americans. Its common features include a burning painful sensation in the mouth, often associated with dysgeusia and xerostomia, despite normal salivation. Classically, symptoms are better in the morning, worsen during the day and typically subside at night. Its etiology is largely multifactorial, and associated medical conditions may include gastrointestinal, urogenital, psychiatric, neurologic and metabolic disorders, as well as drug reactions. BMS has clear predisposition to peri-/post menopausal females. Its pathophysiology has not been fully elucidated and involves peripheral and central neuropathic pathways. Clinical diagnosis relies on careful history taking, physical examination and laboratory analysis. Treatment is often tedious and is aimed at correction of underlying medical conditions, supportive therapy, and behavioral feedback. Drug therapy with alpha lipoic acid, clonazepam, capsaicin, and antidepressants may provide symptom relief. Psychotherapy may be helpful. Short term follow up data is promising, however, long term prognosis with treatment is lacking. BMS remains an important medical condition which often places a recognizable burden on the patient and health care system and requires appropriate recognition and treatment.
